European Alder

While in a client’s yard yesterday, I was again reminded of the many and varied, but often over-looked fruits of our ornamental trees. The alder, a member of the birch family, exhibits male catkins, very similar to birch catkins in appearance, but also a cone-like female fruit. Without foliage, the fruit is rather dramatic, and quite a treat to see on a warm, “almost Spring” day.
